Hi there! I’m Carmen Coker, award-winning professional organizer, here today with your 5-Minute Clutter Fix™.

The topic? Office organization ideas, and specifically how to organize files.

Of course, there are lots of facets to a file organization system, and I want to highlight just one of those in this video.

Take a good look at the image on your screen. You’ll notice these files are not labeled with categories like: insurance, bills, or receipts. I did that for a reason – the categories don’t really matter here.

What I want you to focus on is the placement of the file tabs, or the labels.

Honestly, it’s a good bet that your files look something like this, in that the file tabs are all over the place. There’s no rhyme or reason to where you put them. It’s almost as if you closed your eyes, put your finger out to your file folders, and picked a spot.

Now, in reality, your tabs could be close together, like the ones here, or further apart. But here’s the thing: Either way – whether the tabs stretched from one side of the drawer to the other, or they are more compressed – your eye has to scan in multiple directions to find the category you are looking for.

And guess what? This slows you down.

One of the biggest benefits of getting organized is that it helps you not only find what you need, but find what you need – fast! And with this kind of set-up, you just aren’t going to get that speed.

So let’s talk about how you can configure your files for quick access. And the good news is: it’s really easy and will take you very little time at all.

Your 5-Minute Clutter Fix™ is to move all your file tabs and place them in a single plane. You could place them all the way to the left, all the way to the right, or even down the center of the drawer. No matter, they are in one straight line, and that’s the important thing.

Even better, create a single plane with a slight offset, like the one you see here. I like to think of the tabs as footsteps, one right beside the other, from the front of the file drawer to the back of the file drawer.

By setting up your files this way, you aren’t making your eyes zigzag around to find what you need. You can look at one row and see everything in one quick glance.

This office organization idea is truly a task that takes five minutes or less. So there’s no excuse not to tidy up!
